Making an office space have the excitement and visual appeal that drives students to do their best means looking for creative ways to shape the space.

The Tersaks Karate Academy in Jacksonville, FL was a tenant build-out designed and completed by The Herron Group in 2022. At over 14,000 square feet, this studio is the largest martial arts academy in the southeast.

The academy is inside a business park, which meant it needed an interesting design to match the energy brought in each day. The Herron Group design team created a complex plan that is unique, functional and visually appealing. 

The flooring design is eye-catching, without being too distracting. It also serves as the practice space for martial arts, as it is a firm mat designed for teaching. There is also a section of ceiling that was raised during construction to make the space more open. The purpose of this is to create better airflow, make the space feel larger, and add a unique design.

This project was interesting to work on because it allowed for creative exploration in a space meant for an office rather than a functional martial arts academy.
